Sometimes It's Always Messy

I've seen a lot of pictures of neat, lovely decorated studios on my Pinterest strolls lately.  I admit I feel a little jealous of all of the space and light I don't have.  Most of the time, though, I'm sane and know how lucky I am to have an entire room to devote to my art.  Here are some true and undoctored photos of what a studio currently in use looks like.

Everything, and I mean everything at my fingertips.  It's a Find It picture (I loved those in the Highlights magazines).  Golden paints, a teal pig, doll appendages, a happy tree made by a special student, a dusty lamp, a painted leaf, a maraca waiting to be Day of the Deaded, Falling Water made out of Legos by my son, Captain Spaulding, and a sparkly clean palette ready to use

My poor, unfinished paper mache chicken models draping fabric for me.  One day I will do right by this chicken.  I stepped on his wonky foot and now he needs totally reconstructed legs.  He's standing with the aid of heavy books and lots of tape.

My current painting in process--the empress finally has babies!  There's more design work to put on the fabric and flora to be added to the background.  If I can force myself to stop making Halloween themed art, I will get this one finished soon.

One day I needed to paint something THIS color.  It was during a particularly gray week outside.   I have no idea what I'm going to do with it now--probably gesso over it and make something totally different.  It's all part of the process.  There's plenty of art I make that no one ever sees.  It's kinda like exercise. There's a lot of behind the scenes work going on before anyone notices the results.

The table is covered in paint.  Looking over my shoulder at the rest of it now, there is not a single spot my eye rests without a spot of paint or glue or ink on it.

Almost as important as paint, I've just gotta have music.  Sometimes I listen to only one artist during a particular painting, testing the patience of those around me.  Sometimes my mood is totally in control.   Sometimes I went to a concert the night before and I'm slightly obsessed with the band.  This summer I made a playlist of carnival/circus themed songs to play while working on The Universe.  It all works.

So there you have it, a peek into my studio.  Pardon the mess.  It'll be here when you come back. Thanks for looking around.
